Whether you are ready to purchase your first home or ready to sell your current home and move to a new location, there are several important factors worth considering. First, it’s best to establish the reasons why you’re looking to buy or move. While there are many benefits to home ownership, it is a major financial commitment and you need to be certain that your decision is an educated one.

First, begin jotting down a list of all of the reasons why you may need a new home. Use the following questions to help you get started:

  • Do you need more room for your growing family?
  • Will you be closer to schools for your children?
  • Will you be more comfortable in the new home?
  • Will you be able to decorate the home to your tastes without incurring high additional costs?
  • Are you moving to be closer to friends and/or family?
  • Is the home in an area where you would like to be?

In the case that you’re contemplating a move, use the following questions to help you get started:

  • Are you moving to be close to someone or something?
  • Are you moving for a better employment opportunity?
  • Will this move allow you to grow as a person or as a family?
  • Will you be leaving behind people that are a part of your life?
  • Are you excited about moving to the new city or town?
  • Do you know people there?
  • Are there quality schools for your children?
  • What is the crime rate?
  • Is the housing there affordable?
  • Is the climate there tolerable?
  • Will you be able to continue enjoying a similar lifestyle there?
  • Will your spouse and/or children be happy to adapt to this new place?
